OnePlus has just done something pretty cool. They dropped Android 17 Beta 2 for the OnePlus 15. And guess what? This is the first time a non-Pixel phone is getting it so early.

Most people are still waiting on Google to push the beta to Pixels. But OnePlus and Oppo jumped the queue. If you own a OnePlus 15, you can now taste the next big Android version before almost everyone else.

But hold on. This isn’t your regular smooth update. It’s a proper early beta. And OnePlus themselves are warning everyone loud and clear.

Why OnePlus is giving Android 17 Beta 2 so soon

OnePlus has always been fast with betas. Remember how they were first with Android 15 beta too? This time they did it again.

The official announcement came straight from the OnePlus Community. They said the OxygenOS team wants users to experience the newest Android as early as possible. Fair enough. But they also added a long list of cautions right at the top.

This beta is purely for developers and very advanced users. If your OnePlus 15 is your daily driver, OnePlus is basically telling you: “Please don’t touch it yet.”

Do you need to wipe your data?

Yes. And this is non-negotiable. When you flash Android 17 Beta 2, your phone will do a full factory reset. All apps, photos, messages, everything gets wiped. So back up everything properly before you even think about it.

You also need to be on one of these two OxygenOS 16 builds right now:

  • 16.0.5.700
  • 16.0.3.503

Anything else and the update might not work or could brick your phone. Carrier-locked versions (TMO/VZW etc.) are not supported at all.

How to install it (step by step)

Getting Android 17 Beta 2 on your OnePlus 15 is a manual process. First, go to the official OnePlus Community thread and download the correct ROM zip file for your region. Copy the zip to your phone’s main internal storage, not inside any folder.

For most users (India, Europe, Global), unlock Developer Options by tapping the build number seven times in About Device. Then go to Settings > System & Updates, tap the three-dot menu, select Local install, choose the zip file, and follow the prompts to upgrade. Your phone will wipe all data during installation.

If you’re in North America, first install the special OnePlus Updater APK provided in the thread. Open the app, select the zip file, and proceed with the upgrade.

After installation, your OnePlus 15 will reboot into Android 17 Beta 2. Make sure you have a full backup before starting, as everything gets erased. Double-check your current OxygenOS version and region to avoid issues.

What’s actually new in Android 17 Beta 2?

Google’s official changelog for Beta 2 includes:

  • New “Bubbles” feature for any app (floating chat heads style)
  • Stronger SMS OTP scam protection
  • EyeDropper API for developers
  • Privacy-preserving Contacts Picker
  • Better cross-device handoff
  • Improved performance and power efficiency

On the OnePlus 15 you won’t see the full OxygenOS 17 skin yet. This is mostly pure Android 17 with some basic OnePlus tweaks. The real OxygenOS magic (like new AI features, HyperIsland improvements, etc.) will come later when the proper OxygenOS 17 Open Beta starts.

Should you install it right now?

Let me be straight with you.

Install it if:

  • You are a developer or app tester
  • You love living on the bleeding edge
  • You have a secondary phone or don’t mind losing data
  • You want to report bugs and help shape the final version

Skip it if:

  • This is your main phone
  • You hate bugs and instability
  • You don’t want to wipe everything
  • You can wait 2-3 months for the stable or Open Beta

Most normal users should wait. The stable OxygenOS 17 will probably land around June-July 2026 anyway. And by then it will be way more polished.

Known issues right now

OnePlus has already listed several problems:

  • Screen flickering in some apps
  • Random crashes and unresponsiveness
  • Cast feature not working properly
  • Some system settings acting weird
  • Possible battery drain or heating in early days

These are typical early beta problems. They will get fixed over time.

Final thoughts

Overall, this is an exciting but risky update. Early access is great, but stability isn’t quite ready yet. Therefore, for everyday users, waiting is the smarter choice. What do you think – worth the risk or better to wait? Let me know below.
